Kidney stones are a common health problem that occurs when certain chemicals become concentrated in the kidneys to form crystals. Drinking plenty of water is the best way to prevent kidney stones. Taking enough water helps to dilute the stone-forming substances in urine, and they are less crystallized. A person must drink at least 12 glass of water daily to avoid kidney stone formation.
Limit Foods High in Oxalates
Oxalate is an anti-nutrient found in many plant foods like beets, spinach, nuts, potatoes, soybeans, rhubarb, tea and chocolate. A person having kidney stones should restrict foods rich in oxalates. A high oxalate intake form crystals by binding calcium and minerals that lead to formation of stone.
Get Enough Calcium
A diet rich in calcium is recommended as it aids in decreasing the risk of forming kidney stones. Dietary calcium binds to oxalate in the diet, and prevents it from being absorbed. The kidneys then don’t have to pass it through the urinary system.
Reduce Intake of Salt
Excess salt intake can cause water retention and lead to dehydration. This will increase the amount of calcium excretion through urine and aid the risk of kidney stones formation.
Increase Intake of Citric Acid
Include more citrus fruits in your diet such as lemon, lime, orange or grapefruits. High citric acid level in body helps to prevent formation and growth of kidney stones. These bind with calcium oxalate crystals and prevent stone formation and enlargement.
Limit Animal Protein
High sources of animal protein like meat, fish and eggs is linked with a risk of developing kidney stones. Animal protein contains purines which break down into uric acid and increase the level of uric acid and lead to kidney stones.
