How to Lower Alkalinity in Pool

Pool alkalinity is a measure of your pool water’s ability to neutralize acids. In simple terms, it is the amount of alkaline substances present in the water. A high alkalinity level of pool can lead to imbalanced pH level, which results in high calcium levels. This makes water cloudy and scaly. Addition of excess sodium bicarbonate when adjusting your pool water is the main reason of high pool alkalinity. Other reason is the local water source. Total alkalinity should range between 80-120 ppm. High alkalinity will also cause irritation to skin and eyes of swimmers. To keep your pool water healthy, you should balance your total alkalinity level. There are certain chemicals used to reduce pool alkalinity but muriatic acid is most commonly used.
Just follow the below steps to lower the alkalinity levels:

First test the total alkalinity level of swimming pool.

Turn off the swimming pool circulation pump. Wait for an hour for the water to get still.

Wear safety gloves and glasses.

Use the manufacturer’s directions, to determine the total amount of muriatic acid required to be added based on the volume of pool to lower the alkalinity to the desired parts per million.

You can either add directly into the water or dilute it before adding.

Pour it into the deepest part of the pool in a single, tight stream so that the liquid flow towards the bottom of the pool.

Allow it to sit in the pool for an hour.

Then turn on the pool pump.

Test the total alkalinity level again in between 6 to 24 hours.

If the alkalinity level is still high, wait for 2-3 days to add additional muriatic acid as total alkalinity may takes several days to re-balance.

After adding acid, test the proper pH levels and adjust the pH if necessary.
