Tips to Overcome Negative Thoughts and Depression

Every once in a while, you find yourself doubting your beliefs and questioning your decisions. The circumstances of your life occur in a manner that it feels like the universe is conspiring against you and making every effort to tear you down. You lose interest in your favorite activities and you try your best to isolate yourself from everyone around you. During such times, when you feel lonely and alone you usually tend to space out yourself from all the worldly affairs. You enjoy your solace more than any other company which the world offers you.

In times like these, it is very difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, it is exactly in times like these, when you need all the positivity you can gather in order to help you get through the depression enveloping you. Positivity is very much needed during such days because too much negativity can compel you to give up on someone or something very dear. Also, one negative thought can destroy the best of things. Getting rid of negativity can be quite a challenge and sometimes, even though you really want to think positively about the situation, you find yourself at a loss of motivation to do so. Thus, the next time you feel yourself slipping into the cradle of sad depressing thoughts, remind yourself about the following things:

1. If you want good things to happen to you, you have to be prepared for the bad things too.
Literally speaking, good and bad are two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other. Thus, if you find yourself caught up in a mesh of bad things, just hang on a little longer, good things are on its way.

2. Success differs from person to person.
What might be success for you might be someone else’s stepping stone. Your idea of success is what you set your goal as. Anything beyond that doesn’t and shouldn’t matter to you because it is not your definition of success.

3. If you keep thinking about the dark, you will never find the light.
Metaphorically speaking, in order to walk through the darkness, one has to follow the light. However, if you keep walking in circles to see the darkness around you, you will never walk past it. In other words, stop ruminating on the negative things and pay attention to the ultimate positive goals.

4. Happiness is a result of your decision to be happy.
If you decide to be happy, there is nothing in this big wide world that can stop you from attaining happiness. It is only when YOU decide to quit wallowing in self-pity and instead decide to be happy, that you will truly find happiness.

5. Lastly, always keep in mind this beautiful quote from the book ‘Dept. of Speculation’ by Jenny Offill – “You think the mental anguish you are experiencing right now is a permanent condition, but for a vast majority of people, it is only a temporary state”.

Thus, depression can be scary and confusing, leaving you alone to feel hopeless and helpless. But it is upon you to decide to walk out of it, towards the light leading you to happiness.
