The pandora virus is newly discovered virus which is probably the world’s largest, it was found by French scientists in Chile and Australia. Viruses are small balls of protein that contain a small collection of genes; the pandora virus is around one micro meter long and does not affect humans. The pandora virus in intriguing as scientists say that it defies classification and these Pandora viruses have about 2500 genes. Around 2300 of these genes contained in the pandora virus are new to scientists which make this virus distinctly unique from other viruses. Since scientists cannot trace the pandora virus to any other cellular lineage already discovered, there are suggestions that their discovery could point out to the existence of a fourth domain of life. The pandora virus does not suit the definition of the average virus and scientists are yet to discover the surprises contained within it.

This giant virus is a thousand times bigger than the influenza virus and can also be viewed under normal microscope. The mimivirus and mamavirus are the two previous discoveries of giant virus. This giant virus is so named firstly because of its size; it also has no similarities to other organism known to science. Scientists are yet to trace its origins; they believe that there is a possibility that this giant virus could have been the evolutionary result of distinct lineage of viral strains which are now extinct. The size of the giant virus may force science to reconsider how they have defined a virus. A virus is known as a filterable agent, this is what makes them different from bacteria. The giant virus known as the Pandora virus cannot pass through a filter, it does not resemble a typical viral particle would normally be highly structured.

The Pandora virus, which is also known as the giant virus or girus looks more like a blob. This virus was given the name Pandora because it is a completely new species with new genes and defies most of the traditional scientific assumptions and facts about viruses. The new buzzword surrounding this discovery is girus (giant and virus put together), a more informal name to identify this virus. Technically, two new types of girus have been discovered, they measure over a micrometer and are egg shaped; their size makes them easily viewable under a standard microscope. Scientists say the girus could have evolved from an extinct cellular ancestor, the girus was found in sediments near the Tunquen River which is in Chile. The second form of girus was found near Melbourne. They are classified as viruses due to thier inability to replicate their DNA; they can only do so inside a host. They also do not have molecules that enable them to store energy and cannot make protein. The girus does not display signs of any cell division process. The ability to make energy is what defines life, so technically the Pandora virus is not alive. It also fulfills all the factors used to determine whether a strain is a virus or not. Its size is what makes it deserving of its own category or domain. There are three bacterial domains that include and classify other organism such as humans, tress etc.
