Common Foods Containing Propionate Preservatives
Weight gain is a major problem these days. There are many reasons for weight gain lifestyle, stress, hereditary and sometime could be because of food habits. Certain foods are treated with an ingredient known as Propionate which forbids the growth of mould in foods for a quite good amount of time. But this natural ingredient has its ill-effect on the body. It alters the metabolism in the body, thereby aiding fat accumulation in the body.
Here are some of the foods that contains propionate:
1. Bread
Bread is treated with this product so as to retain the bread for a very long time without any bacterial development. This is one reason why bread these days creates a lot of gastritis’s trouble. Often these ingredients interact with the acids in the stomach and form stomach gases which are painstaking.
2. Croissants
Another bakery item that contains propionate is croissants. Made out of flour and propionate this food item has a good amount of it to keep the item safe and away from yeast cells that may spoil the food.
3. Hard rolls
Hard rolls are made out of flour. There are chances that the flour may get spoiled. To avoid that a small amount of propionate is used to enhance the life of hard rolls for a long time.
4. Buns
Buns are made by fermenting the buns of dough with yeast cells. There is a possibility that the yeast cells would aid in reducing the life of the Buns. So they are added with a natural ingredient propionate to improve its life.
5. Fried Sticks
Fried sticks are great fun to have along with tea. But a little known fact about these sticks is that they are fried flour and are added with propionate so that the sticks are crispy and stays on for a long time.
6. Donuts
Buns cut into two and attached together with a cream in between is Donuts. Doughnuts contain propionate which is used to both enhance the life and improve the taste of the doughnut.
7. Cookies
Cookies are made from flour and to it; a meagre amount of propionate is added. Not all cookies have the trouble of this kind. Certain cookies which have to be preserved for a very long time have this in it.
8. Dairy products
Dairy products like processed cheese and other dairy products have in them these propionates which act as natural preservatives. A mild amount of consumption is okay but more usage would result in damage to the health in a way or other.
9. Processed meat
Meat is often added with propionate to keep the meat away from developing yeast cells that may spoil the meat. Not just spoil the meat but they also change the taste of the meat.
10. Egg and fat based desserts
These desserts are preserved in taste and content by the addition of propionate. This way the overall taste and freshness of the food item is preserved. But the only problem is the preservative used is going to interfere with metabolism in the body.
Propionate preservatives commonly include calcium propionate (E282), sodium propionate (E281), and potassium propionate (E283). These are used to prevent mold and bacterial growth in foods like bread, cheese, and processed snacks. Calcium propionate is widely used in baked goods, sodium propionate in cheese and meat products, while potassium propionate is less common but used similarly in preserving shelf life.
